Croak by Gina Damico

Lex Bartleby has spent the last two years showing everyone around her how angry she is. There are very few students in her school that she has not fought with. Two years ago, she was the perfect daughter, sister and student. What happened?

Now, she has gotten into her last fight. As a last resort, her parents decide to send her to upstate New York to live with her uncle Mort. They say she needs some time, a little fresh air and then maybe she will come home ready to behave.

When she arrives in Croak, she finds something very different from the farm she is expecting. In fact, she learns that she will be working as a Killer. She learns quickly, and fits into the strange town almost immediately. She has one problem, she hates leaving the scene of gruesome murders when the murderer is still alive. Why can’t she go after them? Why must she leave them to kill again? Then, someone else starts Killing criminals. Who is it? How do they do this? Lex and her partner Diggs must find this person, but at what cost?

I really enjoyed this book. At times it is funny, at times creepy, and Lex is a likable character. The premise seems like it should be much more disturbing than it ends up being. A great book for every reader, and the second book in the series should be coming to our library soon.
